Swellings that form inside and around the back channel (anal canal) are called piles (haemorrhoids). A system of tiny blood arteries, or veins, lines the inside of the anal canal. Occasionally, these veins enlarge and widen with more blood than usual. One or more swellings (piles) may then arise from the engorged veins and the surrounding tissue.
